Description:

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are fats that are very important nutrients for health. The body cannot produce them so they must be gotten from your diet. EFAs are present in every cell in your body and are key to normal growth and functioning of cells, muscles, nerves and organs.

It is estimated that as many as 80% of Americans consume too little quantities of EFAs, a deficiency of which may result in serious problems including heart disease, and diabetes, omega-6 EFAs are more common in our diet than omega-3 EFAs but both types are necessary in a healthy diet.

A balance is recommended between omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs with a desirable ratio of one to one up to one to three. Unfortunately, Americans currently consume these EFAs in a ratio up to one to 40! Overuse of omega-6 EFAs can lead to diabetes and obesity.

The American Heart Association has endorsed omega-3 fatty acids as good for the heart. Through the years, hundreds of studies have established that diets high in omega-3 fatty acids experience a decrease in the risk of heart attack, stroke and abnormal heart rhythms.

Omega-3 fatty acids also support normal cholesterol levels. They also protect the heart by preventing blood clots and keeping other fats from injuring arterial walls.

Two of the most common EFAs are gamma linolenic acid (GLA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). GLA is utilized by the body to produce prostaglandins. During premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or menopause, these hormone-like substances may be out of balance. GLA may be helpful for relieving PMS symptoms, regulating the menstrual cycle and easing hot flashes and mood swings often associated with menopause.

Docosahexaenoic acid
(DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid essential to the proper functioning of our brains as adults. Lack of sufficient DHA may be associated with impaired mental ability as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. Low levels have also been associated with depression and Alzheimer’s in adults.

Rather than trying to choose between fish oil, flax seed oil, and borage oil as your source for essential fatty acids, why not take a supplement that includes all three? This ensures you are getting all the benefits from the different types of omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids. No other EFA supplement is as complete.
